Sunday Shenanigans: Dragons of Icespire Peak
An Exploration of the Essentials Kit
Dungeons and Dragons is one of my favorite things to do and I love sharing it with friends. This group is made of three of my best friends. We may not all live in the same state but we love playing video games together over steam and Discord. Once I suggested that we play D&D together, it just made so much sense and why hadn't we done it before.
Coming to the table we have my dearest DM Bork who was my original DM back for AD&D during my introduction to table top gaming back in high school. We also have TimintheFlesh of Team Effort Games who has been a close friend of ours and has been learning 5th edition D&D at other random tables of mine (through a completed Sunless Citadel game and my current Storm Kings Thunder Thursday game). We also have Ryan, the other half of Team Effort Games who is new to my table and I am so thrilled to have him join us.
Why the Essentials Kit?
I like starting "new" players or players returning and learning 5th edition with modules and tools that were made to help learn the system. A while back I wrote an article that compared the Starter and Essentials box kits. I am a big fan of handouts and I wanted to use this new group as an excuse to use the hand outs for the npcs and quests. There are many types of cards that you are given inside of this kit including cards for: conditions, magic items, NPC's, quests and initiative order numbers.
Another reason why I picked Dragon of Icespire Peak and the Essentials Kit is there are other modules that were built off to help keep the adventure going to higher levels with the continuation to Storm Lord's Wrath, Sleeping Dragon's Wake, and then Divine Contention or to the point when my players are content with their adventure's story.

Session One: The Adventure Begins
We start with Dirk and Cirden entering the small mining town of Phandalin after escorting a cart and some traders from Neverwinter to this rough neck back woods town. Cirden started his Phandlin journey by making it straight to the blacksmith to try and get rid of his boomerang. Making his way to the dwarven Blacksmith he looked for a different blade to replace his wooden boomerang. The dwarf, Almar, produced a short sword for Cirden to purchase as they burned the boomerang in the forge.
During that time Dirk found the Job Board with three notices for current jobs in the area. One was for the Dwarven Excavation, one was to go to Gnomengarde and the third to go to Umbrage Hill. It seems that a dragon has been making an appearance in the nearby lands and the quests are to go warn people and see if they can get anything useful from the Gnomes to guard against a dragon.
Cirden made his way back to Dirk where they were accosted by a very zealous Sister Garaele by the Shrine of Luck the two of them made their way towards the tavern/Inn.
The two of them see a half orc, Toka, out side of Stonehill Inn. The proprietor, Toblen Stonehill, was more than happy to get the three of them ale and set them up with rooms. As a NPC Toblen was super friendly and made sure that the party had any information that their little hearts desired. He also helped the party rent some horses before they took off towards Umbrage Hill for the party's first quest together.
The party came up to Umbrage Hill where they came across the windmill being attacked loudly by some creature. There was a woman in the window calling for help, and as the party got closer they saw that a Manticore had almost made it completely through the front door. All three party members got off their horses (yet Toka used his as a shield partially) and Cirden made it clear that he was not thrilled that they were doing this for a measly 25 gold pieces. After defeating the beast the party found that the inside of the mill was also under siege finding a small creature with many eye stalks munching on rats and mice. The three worked together and using a Mage hand was able to defeat the little gazer.

-Almar the smithy is a homebrew edition to Phandalin. There are other places to purchase starting gear such as from Barthen's Provisions and the Lionshield Coster.
- The Gazer that was found in the windmill was an added Ko-fi donation. He is a tiny aberration CR 1/2 from Volo's Guide to Monsters (pg 126) which is a Wizards of the Coast creation.
Session Two: The Road Continues
Coming into session two the party looked at the remains of the gazer in the corner and helped Adabra down from her room. She was quite distressed over the state of the mill and was persuaded to go back to Phandalin, quite sad to leave her post.
The party returned to Phandalin where they discovered what an absolute scared individual Harbin Wester is. Harbin's absolute lunatic fear of dragons made Cirden start to wonder if Adabra is a dragon in disguise and Sister Garaele had to come to the rescue to explain that this is normal. The party waited patiently as Harbin put their first reward gold coin after gold coin under the door.
Toblen Stonehill was more than happy to have his paying customers back for an evening of drinks and snacks. He also helped set Adabra up with a room next to the parties.
As the three adventurer's were trying to get a full evening worth of sleep, Toka had a terrible dream filled with the image of a terrifying young white dragon with pale blue crystalline eyes. This helped the party be at ease no longer feeling that Adabra could be the dragon in disguise (as she has brown eyes).
Next on the list of quests the party made their way towards Gnomengarde. On the forest path they came across a boar, and as they road off they heard the howls of wolves behind them.
Gnomegarde is quite vast and the party looked around trying to find the gnomes to talk to as none of the kitchen staff wanted to talk to the party members. Dabbledob and Fibblestib were able to tell the party that Korboz and Gnerkli the kings were going through some madness and there were gnomes going missing from the caves. If the party help the gnomes cure the kings madness and find out what happened with the missing gnomes these two promised to give the party the rewards that they seek to finish their quest.

Session 3: What Goes Bump in the Dark Caves- The Exploration of Gnomengarde
The party was led by Fibblestib and Dabbledob making their way into the Gnomengarde throne room where Cirden noticed a secret passage between the throne room and the royal bedchamber. There they find that King Korboz has locked themselves into the bedchamber as Korboz fears a “Shape changer” is lurking in Gnomengarde, and that gluing King Gnerkli to a chair for safekeeping is the best option. The party now realize that it is this shape changer that they are hunting that is most likely the reason for the other gnome’s disappearance. The party leaves, promising to take care of the shape changer and King Korboz pushes something heavy against the backside of the secret door, properly barricading them inside this time.
The two gnomes give them a rough idea of what to expect in Gnomengarde, giving them a rough gnomish mental map of the layout. The party made their way into the "treasury" where all sorts of gnomish gizmos and gears are and as the party was searching, they acquired a pole of collapsing. Continuing the search, they then made their way to the blade room where Cirden pulled on the lever allowing the three to cross the room with out being sliced up. The bridge gave everyone bad feelings as it swung back and forth next to the waterfall but everyone made it across where they were halted briefly by the gnome guard post, where the two gnomes inside showed they weren't the brightest bulbs. The action starts in the Wine room as Cirden feels that something is off with the wine casks. The party had a hard time aiming and figuring which of the eight barrels were indeed the mimic but once combat started they easily were able to defeat the shape changer that was causing so much problems for the gnomes. Dirk had to go back and grab the dead mimic body as proof as the gnomes have a "Doomba" (gelatinous cube Roomba) that cleans the floors. The party went and showed the kings their success and received some gifts in return. As the party made their way towards their final destination of the Dwarven Exchange they see the the white dragon terrorizing their destination.

Session 4: The Dragon and The Dwarves
The party made it to their destination: The Dwarven Exchange where the white dragon had already flown over the gate and were eyeing two dwarven horses for it’s next snack. Arrows litter the road and many tree branches are broken from the sheer force of the dragon's wings. The gate to the mine was already shut, with numerous arrows looking like at one point someone in the guard towers tried to defend the area. Dirk, thinking this is what adventurers do, scaled the stone wall into one of the guard towers. Cirden, hesitant and not having a death wish, tried his best to stay out of the way and not attract the attention of the white death lizard.
After the dragon flew off, with one less eye compliments of Dirk, the party stored the dwarven horses in one of the guard towers to help prevent them from being a dragon snack when the party moved inside.
The party made it through and into the mines, killing some of the oozes and meeting two new dwarf companions. We leave our party waking up the dwarves as the sounds of battle comes to their ears.

The party starts with a battle as orcs and their wolves enter the Dwarven Excavation causing the party to come to protect their new Dwarven friends. As the battle ends the group finds that the wolves were mistreated and Cirden makes friends with one of the wolves.
The party goes back to town and bashed their way in to the town master's hall to turn in their quests and take some new ones from the job board. Now the players have purchased a very expensive elven wine to make their way to the next quests. The party start with taking Don Jon Raskin, the very annoying new overseer for the Mountain's Toe Gold Mine to the mine. When they arrive they are surprised to find that the mine has been taken over by a band of Wererats and present a new obstacle to overcome. They meet with the Whiskered Gang's leader, Zeleen Varnaster, who said that their once lair, an old shrine near Conyberry, was taken over and said that if the party cleared out their old lair they would consider leaving the mine. Currently the party has left Don Jon, and the remaining dwarf minders in one of the back rooms with the promise to return. The party also has taken a wererat with them.

The party and their new wererat companion, Thomas, start making their way towards Butterskull ranch, first finding the ruins of the town of Conyberry, finding both the horse and cow wandering with the branded letters of BAK for Big Al Kalazorn. The party quickly made their way to the ranch where they discovered a smoldering barn and the remaining animals wandering. Walking up to the farm house they discovered a sleeping Orc with a straw hat snoozing by the door. Going room by room they took care of the Orc invaders learning quickly that Thomas the rat is more of a liability than a good fighting friend. Now the party has rescued Big Al and have taken a long rest to continue their adventure next time.
Episode 7: Shrine Clean Up and Into the Woods
I will be the first to admit that I am not particularly proud of Episode 7. Everyone was out of it and there was not a whole lot of interactions. I am very critical of myself as a DM and I am posting the episode up to continue to story, as the party did complete the Butterskull ranch and the Shrine here along with making it to the next destination but it will be my hope that the next episode everyone will be back up to their usual happy selves.
I am here to let you know that our D&D live stream game is going offline. We feel that we are a better vibe D&D group offline where there is just us hanging out vs. on screen. We love the support you all were giving us but we are doing what is best for our party. If you still want to hang out with us, we will be going live now WEEKLY on Sunday's to play video games instead where we can hang out with you all and have good Sunday Evening Vibes.

Syrinscape
We absolutely love having Syrinscape as our sound effect, ambience and music go to for our stream. Syrinscape also has compiled music packs by theme or in our case by campaign making it easy to find the right mood and music for every encounter. Thank you Syrinscape for bringing our stream to the next level of sound. If you are looking for a sound library I highly recommend looking at Syrinscape.

D&D Beyond
D&D Beyond is one of the subscriptions that as a DM I cannot imagine going back to a time without it. The ability to store homebrew creatures and items, have a digital access to my players character sheets and the ease of a digital character sheet creator has made things incredibly easy. Things are easy to search, hyperlinked and what ever published materials you need is available. With my DM subscription I am able to share my materials with my campaigns allowing my players access to my purchases as well.
With this stream specially, we are using one of my campaign slots to keep all of my player's character sheets in one location and they have access to my unlocked materials to allow for character customizations.
Roll20
Roll20 has been a staple to my digital gaming since January of 2018. I have played 13 different games on this platform and at the time of this writing (9/4/21) I have put in 708 hrs on Roll20. The ability to up load maps, tokens, games and pretty much anything you need for a fully immersive digital game has been amazing. In this game, Sunday Shenanigans, in particular it was great to be able to get all of my needs from the Roll20 marketplace. The Deluxe Edition of the Essentials Kit was purchased off of the Roll20 marketplace for this game. I love that it came pre loaded with dynamic lighting and the map/token needs for the main game. The bundle included the other adventures that can be used to continue after Dragon of Icespire Peak and also came with the character art pack + essentials kit compendium.
I love having the pro subscription to Roll20 and have many purchases and subscription sets that I use to bring my maps to life. There are lots of Free assets that are available to all users as well, making it a very versatile tool for those looking at digital options.
Hero Forge
Having customized characters is one of the fun aspects of table top gaming. I love that having a Hero Forge subscription has allowed for me and my players to come up with unique tokens that were customized to their specifications. There are regular updates that bring new outfits and accessories. Color and poses are also a new feature that you can use to get your miniature just right before sending it to the photo booth to get that token just right for play.
Essentials Kit
I own a physical box copy of the Essentials Kit and both a digital copy on D&D Beyond and Roll20. The Essential Kit was released September 3rd, 2019 and is meant as an introductory game to Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition. You can get your own copy at your friendly local game stores, digitally on Fantasy Ground or Roll20 and other places where games are sold (surprisingly including Target). This product was produced and is Copy Righted by Wizards of the Coast.
Ko-Fi
We have been taken by surprise and have a great appreciation for all of the amazing donations that have been made to our Ko-Fi page during our stream. Each donation has been a blessing as we make our goals to bring more content to Dungeon Fox Chronicles. We love having player/audience interaction and the added encounters have been quite fun. Thank you for your generous support and your love towards your players and DM. More fun is yet to come thanks to your donations.
